Case study: WEGO Couriers
A pioneer in green logistics says a new transport planning tool is helping it to improve efficiencies on an NHS contract.
WEGO Couriers transports a variety of goods for Pride Pharmacy to patients of the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. WEGO won the contract with Pride Pharmacy in October 2019 but has seen its workload dramatically increase as the organisation changed its working practices, as a response to the coronavirus pandemic, to keep vital drugs supplied to patients who were unable to attend hospital.
The company is using My Transport Planner, a unique, pay-as-you-go, web-based tool designed to improve courier operations and last-mile logistics. My Transport Planner’s powerful algorithms optimise routes and delivery schedules, improving productivity while reducing costs and total fleet mileage.
Chris Beattie, founder and Company Director of WEGO, said: “Optimising our delivery routes is key to making our resources run better, saving us money. My Transport Planner is proving a useful tool for us on our Pride Pharmacy contract supporting the NHS in Derby, which is extremely busy due to COVID-19. Their deliveries to home addresses have soared as patients are self-isolating or shielding at home.
“It also saves us money by significantly reducing planning time. We can upload tomorrow’s jobs at the end of the day, assign jobs to the right resources within our fleet, and make sure that the routes are all balanced.”
Established in 1998, WEGO was a leader in green logistics and one of the first companies to use electric vans, deploying its first EV in 2003. Today, it delivers consignments using BMW i3 cars, Nissan e-NV200 vans, and e-cargo bikes. Following its success in Derby, WEGO is now looking at rolling out My Transport Planner to its other courier operations in Bath, Birmingham, Bristol, Leicester and London.
“My Transport Planner gives WEGO reassurance that we are maximising the use of all our resources,” added Chris. “As a business focused on sustainability, that is very important to us. It also enables our dispatch team to make informed decisions about when and where to bring in additional resources. Previously this was a time-consuming process, but My Transport Planner has simplified this, allowing our dispatch team to focus on other areas.”
My Transport Planner is a unique, web-based route optimisation tool, designed for commercial vehicle operators of all sizes. Based on the pay-as-you-go model, it costs 99p per vehicle per day, delivering a significant return on investment. My Transport Planner is designed to reduce costs and improve efficiencies for organisations whose vehicles visit multiple locations per shift. This includes last-mile delivery, logistics, couriers, home shopping delivery, mobile service engineers and field sales or marketing teams.
